Scalable and High-Performance Virtual Switch Using Pre-vSwitches - Jun Nakajima & Mesut Ergin, Intel

A single and centralized vSwitch (virtual switch), such as OVS (Open vSwitch) can have scalability issues, thus performance issues as it needs to perform low-latency packet processing among the data plane VNFs (Virtual Network Function) running in VMs (virtual machine).

We have been working on inter-VM communication to achieve low-latency and high-throughput at OPNFV. In our prototype based on KVM, the “pre-vSwitch” of the source VM can directly access the destination VM or the shared pages in a protected and efficient fashion. By having a small cache of the information maintained by the vSwitch, the pre-vSwitch can send packets in consistent with the vSwitch. That way we can offload the vSwitch for inter-VM communication, and thus we can improve scalability and performance of the vSwitch. We share our findings and performance data, showing a prototype that uses OVS with DPDK.
