Our goal was to investigate the usage and performance of an OpenVSwitch (OVS) based virtual network in a Docker environment running on an IBM Power system. Our methodology involved scaling up the number of Docker containers and creating a large network load by running TCP bandwidth tests between pairs of containers. As a new member of this Networking team, I joined in the middle of this research and so this presentation will discuss lessons learned while pushing Docker and OVS to their limits. I will provide an overview of the OVS and Docker project but primarily focus on tracing tools. I used such tools as cscope, tcpdump, and perf with trace_event's for debugging in kernel and user space. The aim of this presentation is to show an example of how new developers can get started working on large projects, like OVS, with the help of open source tools.
