The networking industry continues to evolve toward open, programmable data planes and platforms, coupled with open source software solutions for controlling and automating the network. Network operations and management still remains relegated to proprietary interfaces, CLI “programming”, and legacy protocols that suffer from poor scaling and limited extensibility.

We introduced OpenConfig a year ago at ONS as an industry-wide user-led initiative to tackle these operational and management challenges by defining APIs for configuration and monitoring. Momentum behind OpenConfig continues to grow, as major network vendors bring solutions to the market that provide native support for common APIs and streaming telemetry based on OpenConfig. In this talk we describe the progress to date and demonstrate how vendor-neutral, model-driven network operation is becoming a reality.
