GÉANT as a network infrastructure interconnects Europe's National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) with a high bandwidth (up to 2Tbps), high speed and highly resilient pan-European backbone. As one of the largest and most complex research and education networks in the world, GÉANT supports a diverse range of users and services.
This talk will initially focus on the high-level network architecture and challenges that GÉANT is currently facing. Then it will present the open-source SDN activities that the community is investigating and deploying to evolve the network and offer new services to customers, such as Bandwidth on Demand, SDXL2 and SDXL3 (Software Defined Internet Exchange Point), and Optical Transport SDN.
These capabilities are being developed around the Open Networking Operating System (ONOS) and are freely available for the open-source community.
