We’ll talk about the vision and learnings in designing & deploying the first handful of production sites for Verizon’s SDN/NFV initiative. This is a large scale (50+ rack) NFV deployment that we started to design in March 2015, and began production in national data centers in December 2015 and into large scale edge and small scale edge sites in 2016 (CORD-like initiatives). Verizon’s pod designs are based on SDN software, whitebox/bright box switching hardware and OpenStack orchestration. The project set a record time from design to deployment in Verizon, and in the NFV ecosystem and the large scale OpenStack ecosystem we believe.
We’ll also discuss our decision to embrace a core-and-pod architecture rather than a big monolithic architecture, optimizations that came from SDN that we put in for both operational and performance reasons, and organizational practices that we learned along the way.
