The Open Networking Foundation has never been easily pigeonholed as a particular kind of organization. Rather, we have strived to do whatever we can to accelerate the adoption of open SDN. Yes, we started with standards and continue to create some standards. But we have known from day one that standards alone will not achieve our objective, so we have always included aspects of commercial adoption by both vendors and operators. Since 2013 we have added open source software to our portfolio, not to become another ODL or ONOS or OPNFV or their ilk. Instead, we use open source to augment and accelerate the other things we do, in a unique and carefully crafted portfolio that maximizes impact with high resource efficiency. In this talk we will describe our thinking, principles, and practices and a (hopefully entertaining) compilation of lessons we have learned on the way.

Dan Pitt has served as executive director of the Open Networking Foundation since its public launch in March, 2011. In this role he leads a team of several dozen employees and partners and nearly 2000 member volunteers focused on accelerating the adoption of open SDN.
