Mitigating Security Risk in Practical vCPE Solutions - Ulrich Kohn, ADVA Optical Networking
NFV promises significant simplification and increased efficiencies, and vCPE is one of the most prominent use cases. Virtualizing customer premises equipment means detaching functions from hardware and eventually from their present location. This impacts the risk profile and introduces additional threats due to the software-driven and open architecture of NFV.
In this presentation, Ulrich Kohn analyzes the vCPE use case with a special focus on the virtualization layer and the virtual infrastructure manager (VIM). He describes attack vectors and explains technical controls provided with OpenStack to counter the emerging risk. A combination of encryption, authentication and traffic isolation provides efficient security controls. The presentation concludes with a customer premises solution which combines performance and security requirements in a highly effective way.

In 2013, DreamHost began the process to replace VMware NSX with a native OpenStack solution that provides layer 3 network services to tens of 1,000 of VMs serving more than 1,000 DreamHost customers. The 100-percent open source solution saved DreamHost up to 70 percent in capital expenses and 40 percent in operating expenses. Key elements of the open source solution include a light-weight network virtualization platform from Akanda, IT automation recipes written by DreamHost using OpenChef, and an open, easy-to-program network operating system from Cumulus Networks.

Architectures for a Multi-Vendor IP-Optical Control Solution - Ori Gerstel, Sedonay Systems
Integrated control of the IP and optical layers is one of the main use cases for SDN in SP networks. It promises to change the way SP networks are planned and operated. It cuts CAPEX by more than 40%; simplifies operations; improves network resiliency; and enables cloud-era connectivity on demand. However, the solution must be carefully architected to support multi-vendor environments. I will discuss different solution architectures and focus on a highly modular framework that enables a pre-standard working solution today, while allowing for independent evolution of its components by various vendors to support emerging standards. I will demonstrate this solution running on commercial network gear from multiple optical and router vendors in the lab of Telefonica. I will then survey the main use cases for the technology and demonstrate how they are addressed by this solution.
